Vitamin E — The Key to Periparturient Immunity

α-tocopherol is the most critical antioxidant of the transition period. It maintains the oxidative balance required for immune system activation around calving, supports neutrophil function, and reduces the risk of mastitis. Vitamin E insufficiency in the fresh period leaves the immune gate open — increasing the risk of retained placenta, early lactation mastitis, and metabolic disease.

Biotin — The Foundation of Hoof Integrity

Biotin plays a critical role in the synthesis of keratin required for the hoof horn layer and in the differentiation of epidermal cells. A randomised controlled field study by Hedges et al. (2001) — 900 cows, 5 farms, 18 months — demonstrated that biotin supplementation significantly reduced the incidence of lameness. Green et al. (2002) showed that supplementation with 20 mg/day of biotin reduced White Line Disease lameness in multiparous cows by 45%. An important note: the effect on hooves requires at least 6 months of continuous supplementation — starting late means seeing results late.

Organic Zinc (Chelated) — Hoof, Skin, Immunity, Reproduction

Chelated organic zinc offers significantly higher bioavailability compared to inorganic zinc sources. Choi et al. (2015) demonstrated that chelated Zn/Cu/Mn supplementation improved antioxidant capacity, increased hoof hardness, reduced arthritis biomarkers, and enhanced immune response. Zhao et al. (2024) showed that chelated Zn-amino acid supplementation improved immune function and antioxidant status, and reduced somatic cell count more effectively than inorganic zinc. Zinc deficiency impairs neutrophil activity, disrupts mucosal barriers, and increases the risk of both mastitis and hoof disease.

Magnesium Oxide — Complementary Buffer and Muscle-Nerve Support

Magnesium oxide supports rumen pH during periods of high acid load through its strong alkalising properties, complementing the buffering capacity of Acid Buf. It also plays a critical role in muscle and nerve function; during heat stress, increasing Mg losses through sweating make dietary Mg support particularly important for maintaining regular rumen contractions and overall metabolic stability.

Synergy: Rumen + Micronutrition

When rumen pH is kept stable, fibre digestion improves, energy balance is supported, and the absorption of micronutrients is enhanced.
