Used as the underlay in direct contact with the silage surface, SealPlus Transparent provides up to 800 times lower oxygen transmission compared to conventional 45µm PE film through its 11-layer EVOH oxygen barrier — stopping spoilage and dry matter loss at the source in the upper layer of the silage.
The Most Critical Point in Silage: The Surface.
The upper layer is where air comes into greatest contact with the silage and where spoilage begins. Conventional PE films cannot fully block oxygen transmission — air slowly permeates, mould and yeast development begins, and nutritional value declines. Borreani et al. (2007) demonstrated that an oxygen-barrier film reduced dry matter losses in the upper layer by up to 3.7 times compared with standard PE.
SealPlus Transparent targets this point directly. The EVOH oxygen barrier layer at the centre of the 11-layer structure is protected between anti-UV polyethylene layers, ensuring full contact with the silage surface. Oxygen transmission under laboratory conditions is 5 cm³/m²/24 hours — one eight-hundredth of that of conventional 45µm PE film.
Placed beneath the main top cover, this transparent film forms the first line of defence in a two-layer sealing system — blocking oxygen at the source and laying the groundwork for controlled fermentation.
